Liquid Penetrant Performance Checks
Test pieces are essential for assessing the performance of liquid penetrant processes and determining that a suitable level of sensitivity is being achieved. We supply a range of commonly used test pieces that can be used to measure and or compare different consumables. Differing types and brands of penetrant will produce different result but the same product can sometimes work differently if contaminated with water or greases etc. This makes such tests essential to reliable and NDT.

Ni Cr Test Panel  Tyep 1Type (JIS Z 2343-3/ISO 3452-3)


TypeI NiCr test panels (also known as ISO 3452-3 type 1 reference blocks) are made of brass plated with a 20-micron nickel-chromium alloy. These panels are stressed to induce linear cracks and cut into two paired panels for comparative testing of new and in-service materials. The panels are available with crack depths of 10, 20, 30 and 50 µm. For the red dye penetrant test, panels of 30 µm and 50 µm are used, while for the fluorescent penetrant test the panels vary between 10 µm and 20 µm for ultra-high sensitivity, 10, 20 and 30 µm for high sensitivity and 20, 30 and 50 µm for normal sensitivity. This setting ensures optimum performance evaluation of the permeate.

Type 3 reference test block

Cracked Aluminum Test Blocks compare sensitivity of different penetrants or sensitivity of new and used penetrants. This is done by processing one half of the block with used penetrant and the other half with fresh penetrant. It is manufactured to meet the ASME Boiler Pressure Code, Section V & III, and MIL-I-23135-C. The cracked aluminum block is made from 2024 aluminum and is 3” x 2” x 3/8” thick. A 1/8" wide groove separates the blocks two sides to facilitate side-by-side penetrant comparison.

Test panels for Magnetic particle Testing

The standard test specimen is a tool to evaluate the performance of magnetic particle inspection and to improve the accuracy of the inspection results. Magnetic powder flaw detection is a technique to detect the presence of minute defects or cracks on the surface of metal parts or structures.

By using a test piece, the sensitivity and accuracy of magnetic particle inspection can be objectively evaluated. It is also possible to examine factors that affect the performance of magnetic powder testing. For example, the performance of the equipment, magnetic powder, and inspection fluid used, the strength and direction of the magnetic field, and the suitability of the test operation are evaluated.

Type A standard test specimens are used to reliably indicate the orientation of a particular defect. If the defect is in a particular direction, the pattern of the magnetic powder will be in a particular pattern. The clear indication of this pattern helps to maintain the accuracy of the flaw detection. In the test specimen, the magnetization method, the value of the magnetizing current, the application method of the magnetic powder, and the concentration of the magnetic powder in the test solution are adjusted.

The test specimen is made of a thin sheet of pure iron, with grooves on one side. The test specimens are classified into several types according to the groove depth, plate material, and thickness.
